How to Outswim a Shark Without a Snorkel by Jess Keating...

How I Heard About It:   I read How to Outrun a Crocodile When Your Shoes Are Untied a couple of years ago.  It was exciting to know that the sequel was out and became one of my many book purchases.

What It Is About:  This story picks up right where the first book left off.  Ann is still living in the zoo and is going to help open the new shark exhibit.  She can't wait for this opportunity, but is shocked to learn that her number one enemy, Ashley, is also going to be working on this zoo project.  This is not good news for Ana, but she really has no choice to try to make things work for the sake of the exhibit.  Once they begin working together, some things go well and of course some things don't go so well.    Ana can't decide whether Ashley is trying to be a true friend or is up to no good.  As bad things start to happen at the exhibit and Ana gets the blame, she figures Ashley is trying to frame her.  Ana makes it her goal to sabotage Ashley's presentation during the opening of the shark tank.

What I Thought Of It:   I remember enjoying the first book in this series and this second book was even better.  I found the story line interesting and a wonderful continuation from the first book.  I love the character of Ana and find her completely delightful.  It was great to see the relationship between Ana and Ashley grow in more than one way.  The subject matter is both serious and full of humor.  This isn't always easy to do in the same book.

Who Should Read It:  This chapter book is geared toward the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade reader.  I also think it would make for a great read aloud in either grade five or six.  Because the main character, and her enemy, are female; girl readers may enjoy this novel more than our male readers.  This book shows a strong, smart, and independent teenager, making it a great role "model" for the young girls out there in the world.  Happy Reading!
